Use Case of Email address:
Emails will be used for account management purpose, for example: confirming email address after signing up for a new login name, identifying Authenticator account in smart phone Authenticator app, or initiating the password reset process by clicking on "Forgot your password" link.
Use Case of Authenticator app:
2FA (two-factor authentication) helps secure your account. 2FA with Authenticator app is more secure than using text messages, because it is easier for a hacker to gain access to your text messages than it is to gain physical access to your smart phone. There are methods for hackers to intercept your text messages, or hack into your phone carrier and access the text messages. With the Authenticator app, the verification codes are generated and stored temporarily on your phone and expire within a certain timeframe (normally 30 seconds).
